Scaling & Polishing
Sealing and polishing treatment, also known as dental sealants and dental polishing, are two separate procedures commonly performed by dentists to improve oral health and protect the teeth.
- Dental Sealants: Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings that are applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth (molars and premolars). These teeth often have deep grooves and pits that are difficult to clean thoroughly with regular brushing. Dental sealants help prevent cavities by creating a barrier that blocks out bacteria and food particles from getting trapped in these grooves.
The process of applying dental sealants is quick and painless. The dentist will clean and dry the tooth surface, then apply an acid gel to roughen the tooth enamel. After rinsing and drying the tooth again, the sealant material is brushed onto the tooth and hardened using a special curing light. The sealant forms a protective shield over the tooth surface, providing long-lasting cavity protection.
- Dental Polishing: Dental polishing is a procedure performed during a dental cleaning (prophylaxis) to remove plaque, stains, and tartar from the teeth, leaving them smooth and shiny. It involves the use of a dental polishing instrument called a prophy cup or brush, which is typically a small, rubber cup attached to a low-speed handpiece.
The dentist or dental hygienist will apply a polishing paste that contains abrasive particles to the teeth and then use the prophy cup or brush to gently polish the tooth surfaces. The polishing process helps remove surface stains caused by food, beverages, tobacco, and other factors. It also helps smoothen the tooth surface, making it harder for plaque and bacteria to adhere, thereby reducing the risk of cavities and gum disease.
Dental polishing is usually performed as part of a routine dental cleaning, along with other preventive measures such as scaling (removing tartar or calculus) and flossing. It helps maintain oral hygiene, keeps the teeth looking clean and bright, and contributes to overall oral health.
Both dental sealants and dental polishing are preventive treatments aimed at protecting the teeth and maintaining oral health. They are commonly recommended by dentists, particularly for children and individuals at higher risk of developing cavities or dental issues. Regular dental check-ups and professional cleanings are essential for maintaining optimal oral health and preventing dental problems.
